Our first feature!

Economic Times India, Northeast Today, Meghalaya Monitor and Syllad gave us recognition for being the first UK importers of Lakadong Turmeric! We're incredibly pleased and proud to be the first to bring this beautiful spice to the UK!

Why is this turmeric so special?

It's grown in Meghalaya, Jaintia Hills, North-East India. An area that was once overhauled with coal mining, but it wasn't until Smt. Trinity Saioo saw an opportunity for Lakadong Turmeric. A local teacher, Saioo spearheaded the project to what it is today. A few years ago, Saioo learnt that this particular turmeric fetched higher prices and demand, due to its high-quality and high level of curcumin (9% and one, if not the highest in the world). She knew she had to share this with her local villagers that would benefit financially and socially from this extraordinary turmeric. She began attending farming classes to further educate herself on organic farming, and with the help of the local government, an SHG (self-help group) of women farmers was created!

Many attempts have been made in the past to grow this variety of turmeric in other areas of India, but have fallen short. Jaintia Hills really does have the most unique and perfect mix of quality soil, high altitudes and weather conditions giving Lakadong Turmeric its sweet, buttery taste. Which to this day, still blows my mind - growing up I loathed drinking turmeric milk, but this turmeric is something I look forward to drinking every other evening.

I am ever-grateful to our farm partners for connecting us to the local farmers which we've been able to build a lovely relationship with; and Smt. Trinity Saioo and the local government for facilitating Mission Lakadong. The SHG project has deeply inspired us to try and carry the same framework in other areas in North-East India we hopefully plan to work in to source medicinal-quality herbs and spices that make a difference.
